Athlete Spotlight - Matt Walczak

Questions for Matt:

How long have you been racing?

I raced for about ten years as a junior and collegiate cyclist at Marian University in the ’90s and early 2000s. Working with the The Cycling Formula, I started racing again after 20 years and have been having a blast!

What are/were your goals for this season?  Long Term?

This season was all about rebuilding my base fitness and weight loss. I was heavier than I care to admit, and it was time for a change in my lifestyle. Over the next few years, I like to see where my training takes me. I don’t see team pursuit in my future, but who knows?

What is your favorite workout?

Those big long days are my favorite, especially when six hours feel like two.

What brought you to cycling?

I had a bike shop job as a kid and was fortunate to have some fantastic mentors.

What did you do in 2020 to keep yourself motivated?

2020 was different for me. Like most, I was work from home, and it actually allowed me to pick up cycling again after many years away from the pedals.

When did you begin with The Cycling Formula?

Spring of 2021.

Why did you decide to train with The Cycling Formula?

The Cycling Formula was very approachable and made me feel comfortable.

Who is your coach?

John Spinney

What do you like best about working with your coach?

Spinney gets where I am coming from and where I want to go. He approaches training with a balanced and calm nature that drives me to get better every day. He also has excellent playlists!

Questions for Coach Spinney

What do you like most about coaching Matt?

Matt is very detail oriented and takes coaching seriously which means he really can get the most out of the coaching experience.  Because he is so invested in it, it amplifies my own motivation to help him unlock more fitness. He’s an absolute joy to coach and work with.

What is one thing which stands out most about Matt?

Matt used to bike race in the 90s when we were both racing as Juniors in USCF races across New England. He took a lot of time off and is trying to get back to his cycling roots and cycling fitness.  This is highly motivating for me as a coach to help get him there.  It’s only a matter of time before Matt unlocks all of his cycling strength.
